Default Neverwinter

Quote:

Atari and Cryptic Studios return to the Forgotten Realms Dungeons & Dragons setting next year with Neverwinter, an online co-op role-playing game based on an upcoming series of novels from R.A. Salvatore.

What began in Neverwinter Nights on AOL in 1991 continues online in the fourth quarter of 2011 with Neverwinter, an online role-playing game by Champions Online creators Cryptic Studios. Following the original adventures and those experienced in the standalone PC games, Neverwinter Nights and Neverwinter Nights 2, Neverwinter takes us to a dark time in the history of Faerun's greatest city.

In the Fourth Edition update of the Forgotten Realms campaign, Neverwinter was destroyed in the Spellplague, with much of its population scattered. Now different factions fight for control of the city and the undead have begun to rise, setting the stage for this latest chapter in Neverwinter gaming.

Players will choose from one of five different classic D&D classes, teaming up with friends online or join up with computer-controlled teammates, taking on adventures in a persistent online world. As with other Neverwinter games on the PC, players will even be able to create their own adventures using a set of robust adventure creation tools currently known as Forge.

"We're beyond thrilled to develop a brand new version of Neverwinter. It's been years since the original became a gaming icon and we're honored to work with such a great franchise," said Jack Emmert, COO of Cryptic Studios. "We've been working closely with Wizards of the Coast and R.A. Salvatore to create an authentic D&D adventure filled with compelling fiction and exciting gameplay."

The game will be based on a trilogy of Neverwinter books by acclaimed D&D author R.A. Salvatore, which kicks off in October with the release of the first book, Gauntlgrym. The game's release on PC will also coincide with the release of a tabletop board game from Wizards of the Coast.

Neverwinter will be the first video game based on Fourth Edition D&D rules, and promises the sort of rich character customization that Cryptic has become known for. Let's just hope it's more compelling that the developer's recent MMO releases, Star Trek Online and Champions Online. With the passionate fan base the Forgotten Realms setting has, botching this roll would redefine Critical Failure.

To keep track of Neverwinter updates, head to the game's official website and sign up for the newsletter.

This is in open beta, and pretty fun.

More Tera or Guild Wars 2 than WoW, and it looks very nice.

Bf and I have been playing this on Beholder. It's quite a bit of fun. Like Pen said, it feels a good bit like Guild Wars 2 with action-oriented play and dodging, but also feels like an over-the-should Diablo 3 with its key mapping and abundance of loot.

I've got a level 27 Trickster Rogue and a level 10 Devoted Cleric.

The only thing that bugs me is how expensive the cash incentives are. You can't even respec without spending $4-5. I know that's how PWE does their games though, so it's not quite a dealbreaker for a free game, I just wish I didn't have to farm for three weeks(to get enough astral diamonds to Exchange for Zen coins), reroll my character, or pull my wallet out if I make a mistake. Also, they have locked crates.

Again, still enjoying the game and it being free to play. Just wish it didn't cost AS MUCH to unlock simple things.

I like Trickster Rogue the most too, I tried all the classes up to about level 3, but the Rogue was the first and favorite.

If I play this a lot it'll be as my Halfing Rogue.

Every other player I run into in this game is human. Why are MMORPG players so boring?

I haven't played a lot yet, to be honest. I've just run into nothing but humans yet. Then again, that tends to be most MMORPGs. Everyone plays human.

By the by, if anyone wanted to be OMG D&D FWENDS, my handle is Sarroh@kunamimata. I think that's how that works.

You just need the @kunamimata to add to fwends. Mine is @Kloftka

Remember that capitalization counts!

Humans aren't boring. Other races aren't boring either, but humans definitely aren't.

It's all subjective. Personally, I don't want to play a game like this that's filled with a bunch of fantastical races and just be another of what I already am in real life. If I can help it, anyway. A lot of people clearly feel differently, since humans are almost always the most played race in any of these games.

Neat, that's what my other friends are on. Time to try this out a bit, hopefully sans server crash.

Double XP weekend. My brother just maxed out. I hit 25ish. I intend to pass 40 or so before it ends.
