Default Donkey Kong 64

I was talking to Rud and Reborn about this game, and we all liked it when we played it. But the general concensus is that it sucks. Why?

It was a platformer in a world of platformers that were generally better because they didn't have item quests as tedious as those fucking bananas.

I loved that game too, but then I was a big fan of Donkey Kong at the time, and I hadn't played much of said other platformers.

The final battle was fucking sweet.

Then again the general consensus believes that everything Bungie shits out is a platinum masterpieces and that FFVII was better than FFVI

My theory is that the general consensus doesn't know shit.

I liked it.

I'd play Super Mario 64 and the Banjo Kazooie games over it though

Because it was on a console that basically defined what a 3D platformer was and could be, and instead of trying to set the bar any higher than games like Super Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie, it instead decided to stick with the same mediocre collect-a-thon formula that Rare games were increasingly degenerating into by that point in their history. And, don't get me wrong, collect-a-thons are fine, as long as they are just there to add replay value and aren't required to advance. When the latter is the case, it ends up being a cheap and lazy way of trying to extend the game artificially and makes for an extremely tedious experience. Which is what Donkey Kong 64 was. Tedious and mediocre.

But hey, at least it gave us the DK Rap.

Flying around as Diddy shooting peanut popguns was the high point

Those top-down minecart rides were a bitch though. And the beetle races

This was one of my favorite games as a kid. Actually, this is one of the first times I've heard anyone say it sucked.

This game is super tedious, and even I got sick of all the item collecting, but there's still so much stuff I loved about it.
I really liked the new Kongs a lot. I never quite understood the hate they get. Tiny was adorable, Chunky was likable in that cowardly but competent Luigi-esque way, and Lanky was.. Well, Lanky was just fucking weird, even for a Kong.
The music was fucking fantastic, but then again, with Greg Kirkhope, how could it not be?

..And as Ryan mentioned, best final boss ever.

Really, GamingFreak? I thought they were easy to get... Arcade took a few tries but it wasn't entirely difficult.

My outtake is the same as Ace Scope's. Before I looked at this thread I've only heard people saying how they liked the game. I actually never get tired of the "collect-a-thon" games, I find them enjoyable. Some parts could get frustrating but makes it even more satisfying when I get everything, be it bananas, star, jiggies, or whatever.

Oh maaan. The Nintendo 64 was the first console I owned as a kid, and you wanna guess what game came with it? That's right, Donkey Kong 64.

I'd forgotten all about it.
