Default Dark Souls

Heya! Welcome to the Souls series general thread. Moderator/gigantic Dark Souls fan Tombstone editing shinobigoomba's original post here! While this was originally a Demon's Souls thread back in the day, it has since been merged and re-purposed with the Dark Souls thread to become a thread for the entire series, including the upcoming Dark Souls II! While we usually talk about Dark Souls in here, feel free to talk about Demon's as well if you wish!
  • So what's the Souls series all about?
You've likely heard of them before, since they're rather infamous for their notorious difficulty. They are indeed difficult, praised for their brilliant design and structure, and being hard without being cheap. I will say I am an absolute fan of the series but I do know it has a few flaws here and there, what game doesn't? *coughbedofchaoscough* Overall though, they're games I can't recommend absolutely enough and are about teaching you to be a smart player and to observe and take in all your surroundings.

Plot-wise, Demon's Souls and Dark Souls aren't connected at all, just sharing their grim, moody atmosphere and fantasy settings. Dark Souls was a spiritual successor and good way to compare them are to say they're alternate universes to each in a way.

Demon's Souls is about the Kingdom of Boletaria's king awakening an ancient god named the Old One in his foolish pursuit of power and loosing a terrible colorless fog across his kingdom that taints and corrupts all who it touches, and it begins to spread across the land. Many brave adventurers wander in, never to be seen or heard from again...

Dark Souls is about a world ruled over by a pantheon of Gods given power by a majestic "First Flame". They used that power to defeat the Everlasting Dragons who ruled over a once timeless world and brought in the glorious Age of Fire. Unfortunately, the Fire has started to fade and a terrible dark sign has spread across humanity... A marker for the Curse of the Undead. Those who are cursed are banished to an Undead Asylum, to await the end of the world in misery. In Astora though, an old legend arises;

Quote:
Thou who art Undead, art chosen. In thine exodus from the Undead Asylum, maketh pilgrimage to the land of Ancient Lords. When thou ringeth the Bell of Awakening, the fate of the Undead thou shalt know.
Many make pilgrimage to Lordran, the land of the Ancient Lords, in hopes the legend is true. That perhaps there is an end to the undead curse. Little do they know what terrible truths await them in Lordran.
  • So where should I start in the series?
I will tell you one thing; Dark Souls is the much better built game, improving quite a lot on the mechanics, bringing in the Estus Flask system, and a bunch of other stuff. If you want to play both and have a PS3, play Demon's Souls first. I mean, even if you play it after Dark Souls, you'll probably still have a good time, but it does feel a bit aged compared to Dark Souls' improved mechanics. Playing Demon's first will also help ya breeze through Dark Souls. Overall though, they're not connected in anyway, so don't feel the need to play Demon's first or to play it at all if so be it.
  • How should I abbreviate the series, they both come out as DS! Also the Nintendo DS!
DeS for Demon's Souls, DaS for Dark Souls, and DaS2/DaSII for Dark Souls II!
  • So, any help you can give me?
The wikidots for Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. I had these literally open my entire first playthroughs and they are a godsend if you need help.

For some more personal help, Nuva's your man for Demon's Souls, he's played the shit out of it. I've only done my one playthrough + a little bit and don't have nowhere as much as a comprehensive knowledge of it like he does.

For Dark Souls though, oh boy, do I (Tpmbstone in case you forgot) know Dark Souls. As does Nuva and Zevorous! We've all played the hell out of the game. I've got it on PC, Nuva's got it on PS3, and Zev has it on PC and 360.

I'm also planning to play the ever loving shit out of Dark Souls II and get it on PC and PS3, so hopefully I can be some help with that once that's been out for a bit.

Anyway, that's pretty much all I can think of to put in this, so that's it for the main post! The original Demon's Souls thread post can be seen below for archive purposes.

apparently it's been getting glowing reviews all over the place. Most of them praising it for being difficult without being cheap among other things.

There wasn't a thread for this game yet? That is silly.

This game is one of those games where you want to break your controller. But at the same time you want to go back like after two hours. Haha, man, it's awesome and annoying.

I totally went with the wanderer at first.

this game actually sold me on a ps3..this Christmas anyway.
From what I've gathered royal is easy mode.
I think I'mma go with wanderer too. I like the look of that class.

Royal is easy mode because you start at level 1 so you get to fully customize the states from the start plus you get a ring.

Wanderer is great though because you get an awesome amount of luck. Luck is like one of the greatest stats to have in the game, specially early on because you can find better weaponry.

So I heard this is an RPG for masochists.

If that's true then it would probably suit me.

Yeah it really is, the hard part isn't even the bosses, it's the levels themselves.

Basically if you die once your dead body sits there with all your souls and you can go back there and get them. However, the thing that sucks is if you die before you get there you lose all your souls.

Souls are your experience, money, and well everything. You can't do shit without souls. So when you lose all of them you basically want to kill yourself or break the controller because it happens A LOT.

A LOT.

It's basically it's the cruelest game in existence because you'll feel good and then like shit.

God dammit.
On one hand, now that I'm in college, I have to live by a monthly budget, and I just bought Uncharted 2.

On the other, I saw some videos of this, and the bosses are making me drool.

well, if you were to get demon's souls, you would be playing it for awhile. So it might be a good deal anyway.

I love this game, been playing it nonstop since I got it. Currently working on my game+ character which is a thief. At first it was a little hard to get used to but once I got the idea of world tendency it was a blast

So I bought this game, played it and died.

Again and again and again, yet I'm still playing. Is it bad that I have my shield on all the time when I'm running around?

Hah I came here to say "HEY THIS GAME IS LIKE MONSTER HUNTER".

Yes. In a sorta more abstract way than how shooters are compared.

You dodge, weave, and learn enemy's moves, to really survive well, and prosper. However, added on that there is a level system.
But same as monster hunter, truely skilled individuals can get by without really needing to be leveled up and twinked out.

I find it actually less frustrating than monster hunter, even if its harder.

I mean, it isn't like FAIL SCREEN. WAIT WHILE WE LOAD AND REMINISCE ABOUT YOUR FAILURE FOR TEN MINUTES. NOW? LOAD UP THE MISSION AND TRY AGAAAAIN BIIIIITCH.

I'll let you try it out this winter break. It's decent.

Was sort of interested, so I'd have something else to do with my PS3, until I read more into it and realized it's one of those games that people heap praise on for poor design choices that make it more difficult artificially. Pass.

: [

My bro in law said he'd buy me MW2.

And Nami, it really doesn't feel artificial to me, like say Final Fantasy or Persona games where they are like "You know, this game isn't hard enough. So now? They cast multi-death. You may lose for no reason whatsoever."

It's really based on skill and knowledge, some trial and error, and if you play online you can read messages on the floor left by other players, which really do help. And they make death more of... not a GAME OVER BITCH thing.

The fact that you can't get to level 712 (top) without 1. cheating (FOR THIRTY HOURS) or 2. playing CONSTANTLY and AWESOMELY for over 300 hours, the final level taking 40 hours in which you must not lose your shit (dieing twice without recovering your body) = wtf.

I thought japanese people had a work ethic or some shit. Do their gamers really have that much free time?

Double post, but like two days latah.

I love intelligent newbies. They watch what others do, stay a bit back but help whenever able, and just generally use common sense.

Playing online co-op with random people who have NO idea what they are doing, and think they do, is pretty irritating. Especially if you are being summoned by them, because if they die: You get kicked back to your game, and basically get no reward.

Then they rate you a D, and people don't want to summon you anymore.

almost done with my first playthrough. The game tends to kick your ass early on...but afterwards the difficulty diminishes IMO .

I'll have to agree with him on the longgg checkpoint thing.
I watched my friend get to Tower Knight for about 2-3 hours, unable to beat him in the end... Losing all progress because since he GOT to Tower Knight eventually, all his souls remained there.
