Default Sir Terry Pratchett

...has passed away.

His writing was the world to me. The Discworld series was my Lord of the Rings. I would look forward to his works being picked up for adaptation and I would always buy his next release. His entire set of books sit in their entirety on my shelf, some wrinkled with how many times I've gone through him. He had written a large cast of memorable characters and was the Walt Disney of writers to me. He wrote wonderfully gripping stories with many comical moments and very heartwarming truths about what being a good person is meant to be. He made Death into a character that made the inevitable end seem not as foreboding and in fact, welcoming. He was a clever man. And he was humble. He struggled with age but kept on going. He was strong.

He was my favorite author. And the world has lost one of the most creative minds of our time.

May he rest in peace.

Never heard of him until today, though he seemed like he was pretty huge in nerd/geek circles. I'll have to add his books to the long list of things I ought to pick up and actually read. It's a shame he didn't live longer, but his daughter will be able to continue his book series for him, and he's apparently left a great legacy.

Wow. You never heard of Terry Pratchett until today? That seriously surprises me. I've never read any of his novels either, but he's one of those names that I figured everyone knew regardless.

I can believe that, he was diagnosed eight years ago and he started being more and more private as the years went on.

On the other hand, he was part of the modern day fantasy pantheon.

I heavily recommend Good Omens, a collaboration between Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. Here's a short story.

In case anybody is wondering why the music, it was what he wanted to listen to in his last moments.

My TA and I spent a half hour talking about this. He didn't even know. I broke it to him and he was holding back tears and couldn't continue the session.

We ended up talking about his books. His favorite is Thud. Mine is Mort.

Quote:
The sun goes down upon the Ankh,
And slowly, softly fades -
Across the Drum; the Royal Bank;
The River-Gate; the Shades.
A stony circle's closed to elves;
And here, where lines are blurred,
Between the stacks of books on shelves,
A quiet 'Ook' is heard.
A copper steps the city-street
On paths he's often passed;
The final march; the final beat;
The time to rest at last.
He gives his badge a final shine,
And sadly shakes his head -
While Granny lies beneath a sign
That says: 'I aten't dead.'
The Luggage shifts in sleep and dreams;
It's now. The time's at hand.
For where it's always night, it seems,
A timer clears of sand.
And so it is that Death arrives,
When all the time has gone...
But dreams endure, and hope survives,
And Discworld carries on.

Heard about this yesterday, Sourcery was what got me into the series, didn't know about any of the comic book adaptions until yesterday, they're good, though it was kind of a shitty way to learn about them.

Night Watch is also probably a very good entry. Its considered by many as the top five, if not best, for being both a very good Discworld story and one that can be read independently. It also features Sam Vimes, a very popular character with very good reason. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

I've bee starting off with Good Omens before I dig into Discworld. I honestly forget how happy reading his work made me. He made me love reading. And its like rekindling a fire with a past friend.
