Default Undertale

Undertale is an RPG about feelings, essentially. This has been out for a few weeks, and is definitely my favourite game of the year so far. If you have any interest in this I couldn't recommend it more highly.

It's $10 on Steam, which is peanuts. Go buy it.

Coming from someone whose sick to death of "retro" indie games.

I don't think "retro" was a selling point. I think it was just easier to make that way.

Anyway, yeah this game is amazing. I need to play through it third time to find all the secrets.

I just finished this, getting the true ending.,,

Everyone should play this, it's an unbelievable experience that I'm never going to forget. I laughed, I nearly cried at several different points, it's an emotional roller coaster, and it's actually pretty fun and interesting as a game too.

It's going on my list of favorite games ever, right near the top.

I already said this about the Witcher 3, but goddamn both games deserve to be there, like I've said a few times here 2015 is just a great year for videogames.

Spoiler for Pacifist Ending:
The dialogue and atmosphere of the game makes you feel like you really are in control of their fates. So yeah I feel ya there Ace.

But then again, what if I backup that save file?

After much consideration, I decided to backup my good end saves and do a Genocide run.
It's awful. I don't recommend it.

This makes me a little more interested in playing it, to be honest.

I keep hearing people gush about it and the extremely cynical part of me has thought they're all just vicariously sucking Earthbound's dick through overly zealous praise this game.

But if you kind of felt cynical about it going in and still liked it, maybe it's worth me looking into. Kind of wish it was on Vita.

Spoiler for near end boss:
I think one of my favorite parts of the entire game is the tone of the fight with Asgore, at least on a pacifist run (I don't know if it's different on genocide) and how nice he is, and how much he obviously doesn't want to fight you. But then he fucking destroys the Mercy button but ultimately you still spare him. You literally overcome the game's interface to spare him.

Spoiler for SPOILER: spoilers:
A genocide run changes the entire game. It's a big fucking bummer but it gives you a better appreciation for a lot of the characters. I'd recommend it if you like having a bad time.

I never played the Earthbound games, but the game did give me similar vibes to the Mario RPG games, particularly The Thousand Year Door.

This song especially, sounds EXACTLY like a track from TTYD.

As for the spoilery stuff...

Spoiler for Spoilery stuff:
I think my favorite part was the fight with Muffet. The end parts definitely had me feeling really emotional, but Muffet was just really, really fun to fight. Really fast paced, tense boss but at the same time not too difficult, with great music, AND I really liked her design. Then the way it ends, with her just letting me go because I bought one of her donuts hours earlier in the game.

I just wish she had a bigger place in the story. I know she was a Kickstarter backer character, and thus was probably never going to be anything more than a side thing, but still, she was great and I wanted more.

As for the genocide run, I didn't have the guts to go through with it on my own, so I just watched it on Youtube. Even that sucked to watch, made me feel really dirty. Sans being the ultimate badass trying to stop you at the end was great though.

Edit: Actually, scratch that, the soundtrack in general is my favorite part of this game. Been listening to it almost non-stop since I finished the game, it's so good.

It was purely a impulse buy, all I knew about it was the trailer on steam and people giving it praise on twitter. That and it was purdy cheap. And yea, wish it'll come out on something else.

I started a new playthrough, killed one Froggit, and quit the game. I just can't do it.

I also bought the game impulsively. It was $10, lots of people on my friends list were playing it, and the few things I heard about it were all positive.

Normally I don't go for these kinds of games, indie retro games inspired by one game or another, really not sure why I indulged in this one, but I'm really glad I did.

I mean, it's because there's not even 10 reviews. But it's still good!

How are there not 5,000 reviews? I meant it when I said social media was sucking it off, justified or not, so I would've assumed it'd have tons by now.

Is it only on Steam? Is it on Steam at all? And how much are you guys going to foreshadow that frogs are more than just frogs? ):<

You can buy it either on Steam or the official site. The official site gets you a copy on Steam, and a DRM copy, if that's a thing you care about, also has a soundtrack bundle that's slightly discounted.

I dunno about the reviews. My only experience with Metacritic user reviews are people bombing it with 0s if it's really bad, or if people want people to think it's really bad. Steam has lots though, I think, 2600 seems like a lot for an indie game that just came out anyways.

Like, actual critic reviews. Does anyone really count Metacritic user reviews? That seems like a silly thing to do.

Although I guess you could say the same about critic reviews.

I can understand the lack of critic reviews, it's such a sleeper hit that I imagine it wasn't even on a lot of sites radars, and that they'd just recently be thinking "hey, there's a lot of hype for this, maybe we should give this some attention and review it."

I mean "actual critic" reviews. They usually run to where ever the fire is.

If you haven't been to the Temmie villiage, I suggest you boot up the game now, look up how to go there, and go there.

It's pretty hidden, with only a few hints as to how to get there and no reason to actually do so for progression sake, but it's worth it.
