Darkest Dungeon is an Early Access game out now on Steam for $20 after being kick-started a while back.
It's a turn based-rogue-like sort of game, but the big thing that makes it unique is that your adventurers will get stressed and paniced from their adventures. Get hit with a critical and everyone will freak out a little. Score a critical and your party members will become hopeful that they can win and relieve a little stress. Eventually they can hit a breaking point and acquire major negative traits like hopelessness or masochistic tendencies.
I had a rogue become hopeless and outright stop accepting healing as he started to say stuff along the lines of "Why bother, don't worry about me we're all dead anyway".
It'd tough as nails but very rewarding once you start to learn it. Getting through a dungeon with everyone intact both physically and mentally is a great feeling. The narrator's voice acting is also incredible, and the artwork is fantastic. I can't say for sure if it's worth the $20 right now but I'm enjoying it quite a bit.
It's an interesting idea and I think it works well within the context of the game. As your guys level up too and get more experienced that generally improves their resistance to stress. Kind of implies that the early hirelings you get have no idea what they're doing but the ones that survive grow accustomed to things. You can also remove their stress/negative traits by sending them to church, the tavern, or an asylum.
It's supposed to be about the mental effects a very dark setting like this would have and plays a large part in the gameplay. Keeping your party sane introduces a very different mechanic that most RPGs don't have. Think Call of Cthulhu and the like, where SAN is a stat in itself with a bit of Dark Souls mixed in.
Pretty big update came out for this the other day added two new classes and some new bosses, as well as a plethora of balances, fixes, and general quality of life stuff. The Man at Arms class is absolutely overpowered and needs a nerf, but for the time being I'm enjoying my near immortal counter tank.
