I was watching the anime but ended up falling off of that somehow, idk. Should really pick this up at some point, I wonder if I could emulate it. :I I love me some visual novels.

These murders just get harder and harder to stomach the further in I get. I'm always on edge, worrying about who will die next and if any of us make it out in the end.

I read a long post by a Japanese person on the subject. That person said Chihiro's situation has been interpreted differently in the West than in Japan. If I'm remembering right, a lot of Chihiro's story had to do with Japan's gender views, which are a bit more extreme or polarized compared to the West. tl;dr the Japanese didn't interpret Chihiro as trans, hence the pronouns.

Last I checked, that person was chased off the site where they posted.

Unrelated to the above, but how many of us have DR avatar/sig combos now? 5? 6?

Oh, no, I know. I absolutely understand why they handled it the way they did. It was clear in this game and I've seen it countless times before in anime and manga. I still think it's kind of messed up. I clearly have a bias here, but I think it could've been handled better.

But hey, points for staying true to the original version during localization, I suppose!

Hearing about it and looking into it more, the Vita version seems to be a more direct translation and the fan translation of the original PSP version takes slightly more liberties here and there and adds its own flourishes. Kind of makes me want to go back and play that afterwards to see how differently it was handled all the way through (though, I assume not much, for the most part).

The trials are so much damn fun.

In the beginning they're easy as fuck but at the end of the game you actually have to think hard about what they're saying, how to refute it and there's a whole lot more noise and dead-end comments getting in the way.

I love it.

I thought I was nearing the end of the game. There are so few of us left. Then the game tells me, "You're about halfway through the game now! Go, you!" IT NEVER ENDS. I'VE PUT AROUND EIGHT HOURS A DAY INTO IT FOR THE LAST FOUR OR FIVE DAYS AND IT CONTINUES.

Finished the third trial.

The game is addicting, I can't deny that. I've been playing nonstop for three days. I just wish the people I start talking to didn't end up as the victim or murderer!

Don't become emotionally attached to anyone. Chances are they'll die.

Spoiler for After Case 5:
This mastermind thing has been destroying my brain trying to figure out before it's actually revealed, because I haven't even really begun investigating since leaving the trash room yet. Well, other than the data center with Hina. But I keep thinking, which kid could this motherfucker be? I keep thinking maybe Kyoko, or Byakuya, 'cause the rest seem so unlikely. Maybe even Makoto... somehow.

But the more I sit and just analyze it, it feels as if it has to be a dead kid. I was thinking the corpse wasn't the real Mukuro, but one of the other dead kids made up to trick us. Then I thought, maybe Junko, because of the fancy pants fake nails. Maybe her body was used. But then I thought, no, wait, Junko is the only student that no one else killed. Monokuma did it. I started thinking maybe Junko wasn't Junko at all. Maybe that was Mukuro all along. Maybe she killed Junko right away at the start, pretended to be her instead, faked her death right at the beginning, and used the REAL Junko's corpse later on as a decoy.

'Cause none of the six students who are still alive can be the one controlling Monokuma. And since Junko's death early on was unique and technically set in motion by her, she's my guess. Or, well, Mukuro doubling as Junko. I noticed the tattoo on the corpse's hand looked more like a stamp or something that was kind of rubbing off. Maybe. Possibly rinsing off even.

I could be wrong about absolutely every bit of this, but I wanted to document it now so I can feel smart later if I end up being right.

Spoiler for Additionally:
And now I find Junko and Mukuro share the same size, weight and measurements to the decimal. Curiouser and curiouser.

Or maybe it's trying to throw me off.

I seem to remember you saying the game was easy early on, but made you feel dumb later, because it took you a while to figure anything out. BUT OKAY, SLICE.

I guess I picked up on the right details, but got some of them out of order. Still not done with the game, but shit just got real.

Just beat it. Good stuff!

Spoiler for Ending:
Though, I was not a fan of Junko's motive. Or, at least, not how silly it was presented. Not big on leaving all the details of what went on in the outside world vague just because you want to focus on that motive, either. The hope versus despair stuff was just like... shut up already. Was kind of irritating, when everything else up until that point was based in concrete motives and cold, hard facts. I know that was the entire theme, but they laid it on sooooo fucking thick at the end there. That said, I really loved most of the characters and mysteries up until that point, so whatever.

Either way, Junko's dead. Good. Fuck her.

Time to download the anime and then wait for the second game to come out here.

This bonus School Life mode is very silly. I just asked Junko to lie in the garden with me and just sleep under the (painted) clouds together and she was all like, "Umm, yeah, no. I've got a better idea. How about you never talk to me again, okay? Creep."

Then I laughed and went to stalk her.

Spoiler for Mastermind:
It was just that one of the six kids who were left being the mastermind made no sense to me. I mean, I guess it could've come out of left field and made wacky butthole anime sense, but the game seemed pretty straightforward and logical in how its cases were laid out, so I figured it probably wasn't one of the six students who were still known to be alive. I also thought it was obviously suspicious that the culprit in Case 5 burned the body beyond recognition. Made me think that it might've been a body I've already seen. Then I started thinking, whose hair looks like that? Maybe a clue with the hands? Nails?

It basically just came down to those two ideas, the mastermind being one of the "dead" students and the body being someone I already saw. Then process of elimination lead me to Junko and, during the investigation, details kept confirming it more and more. Then, the moment I saw the class picture with her face obscured, I knew.

It was fun! Some of the cases, I had the culprits figured out before the end, some I did not. For most of the cases, I didn't have all the details pieced together. I'd usually figure out who did it or who likely did it based on a few details, then piece it all together as the game told me.

But yeah, I'm already kind of having withdrawals. Not enough to just jump into School Life mode entirely, but almost. Definitely looking forward to 2 in September.
