Default MSN Messenger Ending; To Merge With Skype

I got this email today:

It's time to update Messenger to Skype!

Hello,

On 15th March 2013 we are retiring the existing Messenger service globally (except for mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available) and bringing the great features of Messenger and Skype together. Update to Skype and sign in using a Microsoft Account (same as your Messenger ID) and all your Messenger contacts will be at your fingertips. You'll be able to instant message and video chat with them just like before, and also discover new ways of staying in touch with Skype on your mobile and tablet.

Update Now

Yours sincerely,
The Messenger Team

---

So, what's happening between now and 15th March?
Messenger will continue to work as you know it today. If you are signed in with Messenger on your desktop** you will see a banner notification to upgrade. When you click on the banner, an installer window will open with the request to upgrade. This will take you through our installer flow to install Skype and automatically uninstall Messenger.

So, what's happening after 15th March?
Messenger users on desktops** will not be able to sign in and will only be able to upgrade to Skype. If you attempt to sign in, a notification will appear, and if you continue, you will be taken through our installer flow to install Skype and automatically uninstall Messenger at the same time.

Can I update to Skype on my mobile?
Yes! Skype is available on iPhone, Android and soon on Windows Phone 8. We encourage you to download the latest Skype app on your mobile and then uninstall Messenger. You will be able to sign in to Skype on your iPhone, Android and Windows Phone 8 mobile apps with your Microsoft Account over the next few weeks. If you use another phone with Messenger on it, it will continue to work for a while.

Where can I learn more?
For more help on updating to Skype, please visit the Skype Support site.

* To get group video chat, you'll need a Skype Premium subscription.
** Newer versions of Messenger will be able to receive the optional upgrade notifications. Older versions will not receive the notifications and you will have to download Skype manually.

Okay, I decided to take the plunge. Apparently you can merge your MSN account with your existing Skype account, if you have one.

The trick is that you'll have to sign in with your MSN Messenger name/password to Skype from that point forward. You'll still have your Skype contacts AND your MSN Messenger contacts -- right now I've got two listings for several people. I'm keeping all of them until everyone switches over.

To upgrade to Skype:
- Sign out of MSN Messenger.
- Sign back in to MSN Messenger. This will ensure the "upgrade" bar is at the bottom of your friends list.
- If you click the "upgrade" bar, you'll be taken to Skype's website to get Skype.

To merge your accounts:
- Log out of Skype.
- Log back in to Skype, and choose an option that mentions logging in with another account, like MSN Messenger.
- You'll be asked if you want to merge your account. Follow the steps to merge.
- You will have to login to Skype with your MSN Messenger name/password from that point on after merging accounts.

More than anything, I'm concerned that the Skype/MSN merger means Microsoft having more direct control -- i.e., putting a cost on what has been a free service. The email already mentions a premium membership to get group video chat. Thankfully I won't need that, but I'm concerned that it will filter down to include the entire service.

I honestly do wonder how IM/chat programs haven't been made pay-to-use yet, considering stuff like Skype allows you to circumvent your phone bill if you play your cards right -- that is, if everyone else has Skype.

I did this ages ago. Merging my Skype and WLM account. Seen it in a WLM window and was like hey wots all this.

Then I did it because it's pretty useful.

I think skype always had premium services if I remember right.

Sad to see MSN go but I'm not too surprised, not after how awful Messenger 2011 was.

this will probably just make me migrate over to gtalk which is more stable, less resource intensive, and doesn't require me to run another program as it works out of multi protocol messengers easily or out of gmail.

There are also many free options for group video conferencing though I'm not a big fan of google's because it requires google+ which I'm not a fan of.

Same. Heard they were doing this months ago and decided to just get it out of the way early. I still use MSN through Trillian for the time being, and it still allows me to, but that'll end some time this year.

I'm not huge on Skype and I'm still not sure I'll be using it going forward. I only ever open it when asked to.

Same here. When i read an article saying that Microsoft was buying Skype, i said: "well, here goes the downfall of skype."

Even so, i stopped using Skype around two years ago.

If there's no custom emote integration I'm going to cry. :(
