Default They Really Got Paid To Draw This Shit?

The thread so I can post professional art that makes me go "Why?" You know, like traces, tits and ass spine breaking poses, you clearly just reused a trace, seriously you used the same trace again, ok now you're just stealing from other artists, flounder boobs, porn faces, flounder butts, that is shrinking clothing, organless torsos, and just why. . . why?

PORN FACE IS GOOD FOR FIGHTING. Suck that invisible dick!

Don't worry, there's male porn face too. Sexy makeout incoming

Exploding biceps, ten poses in one with that Psylocke (try to follow her body I DARE YOU), porn face, this is Greg Land's work. I haven't read a single comic drawn by him or anything but seriously.

Let's just, let's just this.

Army of Darkness? Surely no one's see that movie poster before and wouldn't recognize a blantant trace along with dead woman pornface.

What qualifies as an homage? If you had the opportunity to design the cover of a comic about killing evil dead things, would you not reference Bruce Campbell?

Also, check out that skeleton on the Army of Darkness poster! Somebody's doin' some bonin'!

I hate Greg Land so much. But Marvel keeps using him. I almost lost it when they announced that he was penciling some issues of Avenging Spider-Man instead of Joe Mad. Also they keep alternating him on Uncanny X-Men issues so every couple of issues looks godawful.

It's a reference when you say it, when you COPY THE POSES EXACTLY THAT IS STEALING.

If you change it up in a way where you overlay the two and it's not like "Wow, that's the same fucking thing" that's when it's homage. I would REFERENCE him, but I wouldn't go like, "Hmmm, I'm a copy this pose." Fuck having a weapon for an arm is most reference a nerd needs.

There could be an image called "Greg Land Quit That Shit." But this way there's also Leifeld, quit that shit. Just as much. Also J Scott, You Just Draw Strippers.

True, but he also did it completely intentionally. It's not a lack of talent, it's "I want this to literally be Machine Man as Bruce Campbell in evil dead."

See, I want to say that's the truth, but he just traces so god damn much I can't accept it.

(sorry stupid words but it's bigger than the other comparison I've seen)

^this one is a reference sketch at least so it's kinda different, but he'd probably use that in a comic anyways^

While not all of them are traced, there are numerous movie posters out there that look just like this. Here's an example older than Army of Darkness:

This thread makes me angry.... Yeah some of this art may be partially to whole heartily traced but it is still good artwork. I'd give my right hand to draw as good as the majority of these artists. Also to draw from still life to me is no shame, you learn more about actual light and shading drawing from something from real life. I have always been told to draw from people, or even recreate from pictures growing up to learn how shading works. Otherwise you get reeeaaaally creepy unrealistic artwork later on in your art. It is just a way of learning to me.

Anyways, I'm angry.

Ah, just figured out what my problem is: Alex Ross.

I like Alex Ross, and I really enjoyed his artwork in Kingdom Come. You probably see where this is going...

He specifically referenced other amazing works of art all throughout his work in Kingdom Come. It brought a new level to the meaning behind the panels. You could easily go through it and say "traced" but I don't think it will mean what you think it means.

We had a Greg Land thread before so I don't want to go too much into this but I will post my favorite one.

Notice Scarlet Witch's hand. Air handjob.

I understand completely. I wouldn't call it bad enough for this thread but some of his stuff is iffy in that regard. It especially bothers me that he seems to use the same models for a lot of different people. I just generally don't care for Alex Ross though.

If you have to trace you shouldn't be in this field, period. I am all for photo referencing, even heavy use of references, but literally tracing it exactly so it lines up. Air handjob is ridiculous and should not be a thing.

I know shit's demanding in the comic industry but there are a lot of skilled people out there who CAN do it.

*deep breath*

Okay...

So first of all I don't read Marvel or DC comics. I wish I could say it's primarily because the stories are bland and terrible and not only don't go anywhere but are designed not to go anywhere, but nah, it's the overall art I really can't get over, that in-house style that screams "we are the head honchos, you won't find this level of quality anywhere else". These comics are drawn in a style, by many different artists who on their own likely possess their own unique look, that was made by a commercial company that thinks more is better and forces it on their artists, often under a strict deadline.

The problem is that these drawings, while on their own very impressive, collide with just as detailed backgrounds and added action lines cluttered with text bubbles to meet the very definition of busy. There's hardly anything to focus on, it's all just a big showoff for what a company can make some very talented artists do. They have a heavy demand on human proportions with cartoony outfits and colors, it's all a jumbled mess. If I had to work in that style I'd go flipping mad, especially when I have deadlines to meet and lots of annoying details to draw. So what would I do? Well I think sometimes I would fucking trace it, why should I care if this bland combination of anatomy and plastic-wrap be considered even less than art if I based it on a bodybuilder photograph, a paycheck is riding on this dammit!

And I'm not defending the artists in question here, but I really want to bring home the idea that this is something Marvel and DC do not investigate into and in fact have created an environment that enforces this kind of behavior. Lots of these artists trace off of pictures and some are better at getting away with it than others. People like Greg Land, as Orangey had nearly pointed out by accident, are exceptionally good at tracing because they are talented enough as draftsmen to influence lighting, color, and/or dynamic framing to capture the readers' eye. They are not to be commended for plagiarizing the source, but they don't take full blame. These artists risk being out of a job if they didn't and have the chance to be paid handsomely when they do. It is not a tough choice to make, especially when your own artistic ability is spent on this in-house crap.

and exhale.

Anyway, stop buying shitty comic books.

Oh and keep posting stuff here, I actually like this thread.

Shit like this makes me glad I never worked for Marvel/DC.

When I was a kid I thought it would be my dream job to draw Spider Man or Wolverine or Batman for a living, and wanted to get into comics so bad. As time went on that desire just evaporated.

yyyeeessssss

That aside, I generally agree. DC especially keeps a very bland and irritating style, and it drives me nuts. I think the image that exemplifies it most for me is the Justice League cover they put out when the reboot came about.

I can't figure out if it's the coloring, the clutter, or if they're both feeding each other. The color feels so photoshoppy and there's all this glowing bullshit everywhere. And even though I think Aaron Diaz's reboot designs often had some flaws, they felt a lot clearer and more enjoyable than these. A clearer voice, I think.

Even then I can't be sure if it's entirely because of DC has its creative environment setup, or if it's just Jim Lee I can't stand. The weird thing is that they seem to let certain artists get a lot of control and their books tend to benefit a lot from it. I guess I don't read many of the books done in their traditional house style aside from Action Comics. I guess I'm not sure what the criterion to reign in their artists is, because most of their new books can range pretty drastically and depart a lot from what their typical promotional stuff is.
