That's true. It is still Blizzard. Their writing for the current WoW expansion got a lot less hokey than it's been in the past, if that means anything. That's by Blizzard standards, though. So.
One of the character writers for the Mass Effect series is the main writer for this game. I don't remember the guy's name. He was apparently hired on late in the last game's development process, but has been there from the beginning for this one. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of most of the character he wrote for in the Mass Effect games, but I figure it'll be fine in a Blizzard game. Lower expectations!
It's very fun, I'm enjoying it a lot.
"it's starcraft" doesn't mean it has to be bad story-wise, I think you'd agree that blizzard has trended towards terrible in its writing recently.
that being said, the story is better than the first so far. The story is clear, the goals are clear, and the biggest plus? you play as the zerg.
and the zerg are the best.
I still don't really like how they put such tremendous focus on raynor and kerrigan's relationship, it's seriously the driving force of all the major events in the universe presently. but whatever, chris metzen wants to write a shitty love story in place of an intergalactic struggle of species, fine, he can fucking do it.
zeratul's still kicking around peddling his prophetic bullshit though. guy needs to shove a psyblade up his butt.
Watching Totalbiscuits 'WTF is HotS' video, I'm pretty much convinced that I'll enjoy the game. Seems like an overall improvement over WoL, especially in how you manage and customize units, and Kerrigan.
It's pretty much a direct improvement over WoL, which is to be expected I guess. If you liked WoL, then HotS is definitely worth getting.
It's a little shorter though, about 20 missions, compared to the 29 you could get out of WoL. There are some short missions that are meant to show off upgraded units but they're super short and lack any difficulty.
Also, it weirdly lacks mission choices. There's exactly one and it's at the very beginning, and doesn't really change much. It's weird.
They're pretty much mastered making an RTS game fun in a single player campaign setting, love the whole choosing what Protoss subfaction's unit you use thing, but from a story standpoint it's my least favorite. It's nothing but "WE MUST DEFEAT THE ANCIENT EVIL" from start to finish, and it ends on such a low note. It's not a terrible ending, like Mass Effect 3 or something, but it's so brief and I wanted a lot more considering it took 50+ hours of combined story stuff to get to it.
It's an RTS. Who cares? Pick a team, build some shit before the other guys can, bum rush (or zerg, if you prefer) the competition. He doesn't need to play the first to be able to enjoy the second. Yeah, I know how Blizzard is with their little stories and lore, but he'll be fine just hopping into the second.
Totally agree, this is how MOBA games work. Even when you put all of your love in this game, you would train your abilities instead of learning lore or some kinds of this shit.
