Default Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty

A friend of mine just showed me this:

Supposedly it's coming out in the first half of 2010, can't say I really have a clue butHOLY SHIT HYPERION TURNS ZERGLINGS INTO CHUNKS AS IT TRAVELS YES!!!

He also says:
"I was reading interviews and they were saying stuff like you can buy all sorts of upgrades and new units with the money you get from missions, like they had the ability to put 6 marines in a bunker or equip it with an automated turret"

Campaign looks like it's gonna be a lot more fun too.

I never played the first Starcraft, so I'm thinking about getting this when it hits shelves.

You probably should play the first one, so you have an idea of what's going on.

Don't forget the secret mission in the expansion. Minor yet noteworthy twist in that one.

Will maybe give it a shot. If only to see how the dynamics between SCI and SCII race matchups differ.

Why is everybody batting an eye that they cut the game into three pieces? And are charging 50$ for each piece?

That's downright criminal.

It's an RTS. Who cares? Pick a team, build some shit before the other guys can, bum rush (or zerg, if you prefer) the competition. He doesn't need to play the first to be able to enjoy the second. Yeah, I know how Blizzard is with their little stories and lore, but he'll be fine just hopping into the second.

Because it's old news, I guess. I did point that out on the old forums, but people like to make excuses for their favorite franchises and game companies, so what'cha gonna do. You either buy a $150 game or you don't.

Huh. I thought it was already out.

Out of curiousity, why are people so hyped for this?

I wonder how South Korea will eat this up. The country's dedication to the game is stupid, to be honest.

It's a game by Blizzard. Apparently when I wasn't looking as I grew up, they turned into that company that can make a game that is worshiped as if it was the Holy Grail.

Well, ever since 98, it's been regarded as one of the single best Real Time Strategy games ever made. The beauty of it was the multitude of strategies one could execute successfully and the great balance of the game, despite the very opposite races. While other rts's tend to be build-up games, or tech crunchers, or 3 unit games, Starcraft could be played successfully with almost any strategy as long as it was executed well and was chosen for the appropriate circumstances.
The games can be very quick and very tense. In one game of starcraft a million different things are going on, and its often the most minute advantages that would end up winning someone a game.

Besides the multiplayer component, it had a good story and a very cool art style.

Since Starcraft, many many games have tried to copy its formula and none have succeeded, none have managed to be as fast and as universal as Starcraft. Korea has its own Starcraft CHANNEL where professional players compete. Fuck, the game was released in NINETY EIGHT and people still play it, a lot of people do, because it's STILL one of the best rts's.

So people are really excited because a lot of people, myself included, really love Starcraft.

I doubt you are into rts's, and by the looks of it, neither is Nuva. But trust me, a sequel to starcraft is a huge deal, because its hard to imagine someone making that formula work twice.

I think it's silly, too, but I've played World of Warcraft for the last three or four years, so I really have no room to talk. They do have a dedication to their games that not many other developers do, to be fair.

You'd be right. Never really appealed to me, though I did really enjoy warcraft 3 and from what little I played of starcraft, that was pretty fun. Was just curious.

I do suppose that dedication to provide their time and effort into their games is something that customers would like to support.

But South Korea's worship over it will remain as one of the stupidest things I've ever heard of, because paying players so that other people could spectate over the game is just...stupid. Reminds me of something you'd read in a science fiction novel.

Let's get this straight. The final price of all 3 games hasn't been decided yet. Plus each game will contain 30 missions, the same amount that Starcraft 1 had. So even if the price is $50 a piece, you're still getting 3 full games.

This I didn't know. But really, the reason noone cares, is because they can still play whatever race they want in the Multiplayer. And that's where the replayability of the game lies.

PS: You can probably find a stream of someone playing this. I believe 1up had a stream going a while ago.

Oh, I agree. Treating gaming like a spectator sport with big names and bigger payrolls is incredibly stupid. It's not just a Starcraft issue, though. Most genres are just not tailored for that.

so you know the zerg? they have zerglings. A lot of them.

The biggest thing I can't get over is how much it sounds like Starcraft. "You require additional pylons" "De-lighted to, sir!" or "Battle cruiser... operational" or "Goliath online" They've got the animated in the right bottom of the screen, big old UI, if you click on units a lot they get annoyed and give you some sass.

There are some new-ish units. The queen isn't a flier, anymore. She's grounded and can't go far away from your base, she's mostly defense. Zerglings can morph into explosive, rolling balls.
Oh dude, zerg buildings look so cool when they're being built. They got floaty little things in them and they're pretty cool.

I dunno, I'm gonna play it some more. But right now I'm really happy. It feels like starcraft. And I fucking love starcraft.
