So, The King of Limbs is good. Really good. It took me a few listens before it really clicked, but wow. I can't wait to see them play this stuff live (even if half the album has been played by the band a few times before).
Also, I'm loving the White Limo video. Dave Grohl really is the fucking man.
This is kind of a "throw shit at the wall" sorta post, but I've been listening to a lot of The Ultimate Warriors lately.
They're a Powerviolence band from eastern Pennsylvania, and (unsurprisingly) all their music is wrestling-based. It's a lot of screaming, growling, fast guitars, and rarely do any of the songs run over 60 seconds in length.
I am in love with this band forever and ever. They only ever put their stuff out on vinyl, and as such it's super hard to find physical copies of it. Luckily, a friend of mine (the one who turned me on to the band) has most of their stuff, and was able to find a lot of their stuff ripped online so that I would be able to experience it.
It's all amazing, just in how balls-out chaotic it all is. Plus, they insert a lot of sampled clips from early 90's japanese wrestling tapes. Shit, my username is in part a reference to one of their songs. ("Bring the Danger" which plays a clip referencing "THE DANGER MAN" of japanese wrestling)
Those are two of their releases: "Our Gimmick is Wrestling" their only full-length, and a split they did with fellow Powerviolence band Kungfu Rick. The split with Kungfu Rick is no joke, my favorite album of all time. Their part of the split only adds up to just under six minutes, but it's an amazing six minutes I'll never get sick of.
I'm not expecting anyone to find it as amazing as I do, as they're a really REALLY polarizing band, but I thought I'd share at least a little. Sadly, they've been broken up since the early 2000's, but they're one of those bands where there's always rumors of a reunion show. (Oh god, I hope so.)
Bonus: Video from a show in Baltimore in early 2000:
"It's a life-sized human skull completely made out of edible gummy bear stuff. It also has a gummy brain inside of it and, inside of that, there's a USB flash drive that has three new songs on it. It's pretty outrageous."
This is how The Flaming Lips are releasing their next EP. This is why they're amazing.
Lupe Fiasco's new album is pretty disappointing. It's not all bad, but it's just a bit too commercial now.
So my friends all love Lupe and they have finally bugged me into listening to him. So I am. Haven't gotten to Lasers though. Gotten through Fahrenheit 1/15, Enemy of the State and almost all of Fahrenheit 1/15 Part II: Revenge of the Nerds. Probably jump back to The Cool before I go to Farhenheit 1/15 Part III. Haven't decided yet.
These people getting me into the hip hops and the raps.
Childish Gambino's stuff is awesome by the way and everyone should really give him a listen because Donald Glover's the shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.
Just listened to The Strokes - Angles for the first time. It's good; not great but it's a decent listen. I'd probably call it their worst as a whole, but that doesn't mean it's bad, just not as good as the others.
This is an old one (1998), but I just got (most) of XO by Elliott Smith for the first time and I'm really enjoying it. I really need to buy the last 2 tracks when I can. 3-7 and 10-11 are probably my favorites. I think this album trumps Figure 8, which was my previous favorite of his.
