Default .webm, the WAVE OF THE FUTURE

I'm sure some of you know what a .webm is. If not it's just an HTML 5 video format that is silky smooth and is being hailed as the new .gif by some (though I find this somewhat silly considering the context). It can have high CPU usage if set to autoplay, but system performance for them overall seems fine in individual usage.

I wanted to implement .webm on another forum so I went and looked into it and it is embeddable and playable with your browsers built-in player with a simple line of HTML (to nobody's surprise). I think it'd be something really cool to share here as well, so I'm just gonna drop the info here and if you want it you can use it.

From Custom BBCode go to 'Add New' and fill in:

Title: .webm (HTML 5 Video or whatever floats your boat.)
BBCode Tag: webm (Or again, whatever.)
Replacement: <video src="{param}" width="640" height="360" controls> (This is just basic size. I'd play with it and see what you like!)
Button Image: http://i.imgur.com/VxDFt7y.png (This is apparently the symbol for .webm so I'm sorry it looks dumb.)
Disable Automatic Link Parsing: Yes

And that should be it! However, I can understand if you're concerned about it being a possible resource hog (especially for mobile users, but I don't believe it even shows up on theirs) so there is an alternative if this isn't something you'd be interested in adding.

Anyone that would happen to have an extension/add-on for .webm on their browser, particularly for autoplay iirc, can do this.

which is to say this

<URL="http://a.pomf.se/bawmxq.webm"><img>http://i.minus.com/i2CIMty2aowxu.gif</img></URL> (square brackets instead of pointy obv)

The people who have the extensions SHOULD see this as a .webm since the tag is higher priority in the hierarchy. Without it, though, the .gif plays which then in turn links to the .webm.

I HOPE THIS WAS INTERESTING and that you consider adding it. I think it's pretty neat and it seems to be catching on really fast. As long as you don't treat them like .gifs and set them to autoplay (since that is really up to user discretion) it shouldn't be too much of a problem for the people on the other end. Just consider it, really.

edit: Since it's such a broad tag in general, I should also add that this will support other formats such as .ogg, .ogv, .oga, or .ogx.

I told Nuva when he brought this up that I'd probably add it if he got me code for it, 'cause I honestly didn't care enough to go looking for it myself. So I guess that's that.

Had a discussion about it replacing the GIF and that's something that I think is kind of silly and overzealous to be suggesting. Plenty of formats exist alongside one another already and I don't really see why one would cannibalize the other. But what is the internet if not a place for over-exaggerating everything.

I feel exactly the same way.

If webm gets an easier way to make them, then I will see it eating the gif. Right now though, not so much. But they are neat.

I don't see it "eating the gif", for the mere fact that GIFs still serve a purpose as quick, small, looping images in a well known format that many people will still find many uses for. WebM isn't quite the same thing and, despite 4chan's over-zealousness, will not entirely replace anything. It'll just simply be used more and more as time goes on, to the exclusion of nothing.

Gif 4 life yo.

It's a cool new format though, however my tablet and phone doesn't support it at the moment. Hopefully it gets patched in.

I can get these to work on hover w/ vbulletin (though my current method is a little ghetto rigged with my limited knowledge of jquery) and it's pretty neat, but I want to optimize it to feel as much like a gif as possible. I will share it if I can get it down pat for sure.

Also, whenever you integrate .webm I want this to be the first official .webm on the forum. I only feel it's fitting and I refuse to let you disagree with me. I await the day I can watch it on here.
