Default Dragon Quest Series

These games are pretty big in Japan and considered to be one of the best RPG series out there, sadly I've never touched one of them and want to get into the series.

Making this thread pretty much to get suggestion of where to start and which ones are the best in the long running series.

Haven't played enough to give you recommendations on which are best in the series, but Dragon Quest VIII on PS2 is one of the best games I have ever played, period. The NA/EU versions got an actual orchestral soundtrack for it in-game instead of the usual synthesizer files, and it's beautiful. Huge, expansive world, gorgeous visuals, fun gameplay, tons of post-game content. Very much recommended. Dragon Quest IX, on DS, is great, too.

DQ8 is pretty much the best game of the series. If you have any interest in the series, play it, period. Though, play it last if you plan on playing anything else.

Dragon Warrior 3 I have really fond memories of, it has a class based party system similar to the first Final Fantasy, except with a lot more class choices, and it's deceptively long.

Spin-off wise, Dragon Warrior Monsters 2, is pretty much pokemon with a more typical RPG battle system, and a ton of content.

The three of these I'd say are definitely worth trying out, all amazing games that left a lasting impression. In fact, talking about them puts me in the mood to replay them.

I can't really vouch for anything recent though, haven't played any of the DS games and that spinoff Wii game is average at best.

8 and 9 are really good. I've only dabbled with any of the older ones, but they seemed pretty solid too

Started up VI since I'm a sucker for SNES RPG's.

But I'll try and find a copy of VIII.

Actually, I did play one game on the DS, the Slime game. can't remember its exact title.

It's pretty fun, like Zelda but with a few twists, only real problem I had for it was there was pretty much no difficulty. Still good though.

Dragon Quest Monsters is the best of the series, if you believe otherwise your opinion is wrong.

Seriously though I loved that game so much. I probably had more fun with it than the Pokemon Games around that time.

I love so much about the series I can't even name them all.

Were the optional worlds in 2 randomized? Seems like you could collect keys to new worlds endlessly and never run out of new worlds to explore.

Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime.

Pretty solid game. Music is annoying as all fuck, though. And the dialogue is cringe inducing, but I think that's what they were going for.

Worlds were randomly generated if I recall correctly.

You wanna start on DQ8. Its got a ton of diversity and is simplified juuuust enough to be understood to an extent and still be a pretty damn good game with difficulty to add to it.

Then play the rest. I suggest saving the PS1 entry for last since its sorta aged a bit bady last time I gave it a try.

Dragon Warrior VII for the PS1 was amazing but damn was it easily the longest game I ever played. I remember it took me a good part of a summer break to beat it and clocked in well over 120 hours.

a lot of it was aimless wandering because the game does not hold your hand at all its pretty much:

"Here's the starting village. Got it? Okay bye, figure out the rest yourself."

Kinda why I insisted on DQ8 being the entry game. While it doesn't exactly "hold your hand", it does at least insist on making sure you have a sense of where you're suppose to go.

Also I think Mega would like it the most. Probably going to sound a bit moronic here, but Dragon Quest 8 sorta has that thing with One Piece where the gang all learn about each other and their relationships improve as the game goes on. It's neat. You got your own crew. Something I dig over JRPGs that toss an army of characters at you with only one lines and tell you to pick only four.

It's really too bad they insist on making DQ 10 an MMO. While I guess the combat system is perfect for it, well...I'd rather the series stay as single-player campaigns. I mean, one of the points of the series is that it stays as what it is rather than embracing a multitude of new ideas. And while that's good or bad, them jumping right off the bat and going into MMO territory seems a bit risky.

But we'll see. Here's hoping it's good. If anything, at least it'll give something to anticipate for the WiiU launch (it was intended for the Wii but I assume they're going to save it up for the latter)

Yeah, forgot I played the hell out of that. Exactly what you said: dumb, but really fun.

I was looking up stuff on Dragon Warrior III.

Oh man did I love that one as well. I remember it took me forever just to decide how to answer the questions they ask a the beginning because it decided how your character personality and what classes your character could easily adjust to being.

More games need stuff like this, that was such a memorable moment.

Also, more games need goofy and weird classes like Jester and Merchant.

Sage was the best class in III.

Dear lord I felt like a god at higher levels. BeDragon is the greatest spell ever!

Well, yeah, it was an upgraded class, and the only one in the game at that. There was no reason beyond role-playing to go with anything but Hero + Sage x 3.

Thieves were the most fun though, at least once you started finding whips and boomerangs.
