Default Suikoden

I decided to pick up Suikoden and Suikoden II ( both on the PSX ) again at the same time- I've been recording video footage of Suikoden II mostly, and making gifs out of it, because why not. I like the animations. And I convinced a friend to play it with me over Skype, and he's really enjoying it now.

For those who don't know, Suikoden is a series of games ( like Final Fantasy, in that you don't need any knowledge of prior games to know what's going on in any later games ) that usually involve you, the protagonist, starting as some lowly footsoldier in an army or something- and then somehow earning a fortress / castle of your own, and going out into the world to recruit the 108 Stars of Destiny so you can save your country. Or world. Or ocean. Or something.

The games don't change their formula very much from one sequel to the next. But I always found them fun, and they're pretty much my favorite series of RPGs out there.

They also have some really nice musical scores and intros.

Spoiler for Some Gifs:

Hm, I remember playing quite a bit of that PS2 one with the boats many years ago. Although apparently it was terrible or something. Anyway, those gifs are making me want to get into the earlier games.

Suikoden II is probably one of my all-time favourite games. Do you actually have a physical copy of it Result? Because if you do then hot damn!

I have Suikoden III, but have never really played it. It's not technically mine. Some dude let me borrow it while he borrowed my copy of .hack//Infection, then he disappeared. I wasn't too broken up over it, but I just never got around to playing the game I ended up with.

Maybe you ended up with the better game?

Maybe it was a game in itself and you won since he disappeared forever?

Maybe your game was the bomb?

Well, I played .hack//Infection for a bit. I did enjoy what I played of my game. I liked the whole idea of playing as characters playing an MMORPG that has gone haywire. Kinda wanted to finish it, but... not enough to have gone out and replaced it, apparently.

The early games are amazing- I love I and II. I've also played IV and Tierkries ( on the DS ). I have III, but haven't played it yet- I'd like to get V while I'm at it.

Unfortunately, no, I don't have a physical copy of II. That shit is like $150.

Suikoden III is a good game if you've played the first 2, and out of the 3 is the weakest. It's not a bad game by itself, it just doesn't stand out unless you have a full understanding of what happened before it.

II will always be the best (and is one of my all time favorite games), and anything after III is kind of eh.

I've heard people say IV wasn't that good, but I honestly enjoyed it.
And Tierkries was bearable if you ignored the horrific voice acting.

.. seriously, if you're going to have voice actors THAT bad, why bother? It's not like people expect voice acting in a DS game. You could have gotten by.

Suikoden 1 was really good, although it lacked polish. Suikoden II took the first game's forumla and just exploded in quality.

III's system was kind of weird, and it is the worst of the series. I really liked IV, and while really liking V, I never managed to finish it. V had a problem where it never had you level up more than your team of 6 and then last dungeon you get to they go "okay now make 3 different teams."

That was actually a problem I ran into in IV. They asked me to make more than one team, and suddenly I was like. "Fuck. I only have 6 people leveled up / with the proper equipment."

Yeah but they at leasst forced you to have characters in your party every now and then in the later levels. You at least had some resembleance of proper leveling by the end of the game.

In Suikoden V that was mostly unheard of.

I like the first one and the second one.

I think if you play the first, you'll appreciate the second one more, but not vica-versa. That's not saying the first one is bad; actually, I like the first one the most. But the second one really is more polished, plus you get a little "throwback magic" if you load your endgame from the first game.

Play Uncharted 2 and you hate Uncharted 1.

Something exactly like that.

I didn't say I liked it over 2. Just that I'd have no problems going back and playing it after having played the two sequels.

I'll probably be the first then because one is the one entry that I really want to play over the others :/

Though its more of the fact that it apparently is the most space operaish.

You should definitely play the first then. I had people telling me to skip to the second when I started. Those people are terrible. The first Mass Effect was awesome because of the story and especially all the space exploration. I loved going and searching planets for things or just reading up on their histories and stats. The combat is better in the next two games and that's all anyone ever seems to focus on. Doesn't make the first game bad at all.

The layout of the Citadel in the first game is pretty lame, though.

Honestly though I played III, did not play I or II, loved the shit out of III regardless. It was fun as hell, sure there were parts that were mystifying to me but that just added to the story in my book.

And I fucking loved the large scale battles.

To each their own, though.

I personally miss Suikoden 2. I loved the story and the large-scale battles.
