Default Nuva tries art

So I like art. I see it as a hobby more than anything, but its definitely something I've always wanted to get better at. I kinda was afraid of showing my stuff on the forums cause like, man, there are a lot of you who can draw so damn good, its just a little intimidating to show off my stuff that haha, I see as really mediocre.

But like, what would the point be if you can't learn to handle criticism, right?

I guess I should start off saying that I have no means at the moment to scan or take pictures of my stuff in an attractive light. Any tips of how to go about that would be appreciated.

So like, I guess I'll start off with stuff I feel comfortable with showing off. This stuff has been over the course of 2012 to 2013 with A LOT of stuff in between. Some of them are my first tries at the medium or technique (cross hatching is so fucking cool I wish I could pull off that shit) and all of them, as you can see, are black and white. I have done colors. I realize I suck at colors. For now, I hope.

I do some stuff digitally. I might post stuff I've done before. I know for sure my proudest thing is that Animal Crossing picture and the fucking giraffe for the random superhero contest.

As far as tutorials go, I have been going over anatomy guides mostly. Particularly the works of Loomis.

And yeah, that's really about everything. Have at 'em. I'll try to update this thread as much as I can for the sake of motivation and improvement. I couldn't find my filled out sketchbook of skeletons but I have one I'm currently filling in, so I'll be putting that up later.

P.S. I just realized after looking at the photos that having a bright light source in front of them reveals how ridiculously light my values are. Well, damn it. The more urgent need to find a better way of taking photos of them, then.

Spoiler for :

Pretty good stuff. But yeah, like you kind of said already it needs contrast. Do you have any image-editing software that could tweak that?

Okay so I'm drawing in my free time and I wanted to try drawing my character from Dragon's Dogma. This is a basic sketch before I try to do her in a somewhat interesting pose.

That armor looks great. It's got a nice thick look to it.

Certainly worlds better than the stick figures I draw that I pretend to pass as human.

I appreciate that but after looking over it, there are things going on with the legs I don't like. I can definitely get better at proportions.

SO okay, any artists out here want to help me with poses? Any good websites for that? I need to practice making my characters look more fluid.

Also as you can see, I didn't do a face. I am scared of faces. Any advice on that? And probably the best way of approaching hair.

MAN I wish there was a decent way to search likes on tumblr, or I'd link you to a bunch of reference and tutorial stuff.

I need criticism on the pose. I'm restarting over tomorrow because my program crashed while saving and I have new ideas for what I want to do with the theme of duality but I still would like to know if I did the pose right.

For some reason, it reminds me of that Prequel comic.

Can't give you much critique though. I'm no authority on people-drawing and it's already pretty good by my standards. I guess the only real problem area I see is the left hand... it seems kinda flattened and I can't really tell where the thumb is.

I kinda gave up on this picture so I'll probably just re-do it (I spent an entire day working on it without saving it like an idiot and lost a lot of touching up) but I figured I might as well show what could have been.

Spoiler for :

tips for hands: USE REFERENCE!

There's tons of photos of people playing the lute, and if you can't get exactly what you want, take photos of your own hands in a similar pose to what you're after. Hands are tricky but reference is never a bad thing.

I dig the color use so far too. YOU'VE IMPROVED A TON SINCE THE LAST I SAW YOUR WORK.

One tip - try to use more broad, sweeping motions. You're doing a lot of small lines, which is fine for getting the form down, but it loses some of the "energy" or "momentum." Like, the lines on her dress are excellent but the ones on the lute are a bit "hairy" if that makes any sense?

EITHER WAY THO GOOD JOB BRO

Not getting the time I want to work on this but I worked a bit on the lute.

I'm nowhere near done with it. And tomorrow I hope to start on her hands after I finish it.

Scott overlooked it for me and I didn't realize that the torso was too short, I'll be working on that today and trying to fix it. He also explained more dramatic posing and I want to mess around with negative space, mostly around the arms.
