Default Recent Troubles / Possible Solution

Troubles: en.spambot.pl/vbulletin.html

Part of this may be from the recent increased traffic to the comic. We shouldn't let that become a negative. This should be dealt with as quickly and succinctly as possible.

Solution: www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=217964

This has to be done by a Licensed Member of vBulletin.

What can I do to help?

We need an admin to get on that, so Nami or Krud himself. I doubt Profanity will be on soon enough to really make a difference...

Also, you have already helped by finding this out for us. Thank you for that!

This looks like a similar, but better option: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=176481

I will look into it, I guess.

More spambots. I try an report them whenever they pop up. But, yeah, they keep popping up.

Is making accounts unable to post until an Admin permits it, like on some other forums, an option? Seems like it'd be a quick and easy fix, even if it's only temporary.

Oh and I think hathang123 is another one, probably.

I still hate to ban bot-like names because I considered it once, decided against it, and it was a real person.

this has bitten me in the ass more times than that, though. There are two bots registering now. We used to have admin approval for signups, too. If it's possible to let mods do that it might be a good idea. Especially with the recent promotions.

I would have suggested changing the signup form in some way and making it harder to brute force as it is pretty simple atm

It was suggested already but I don't know if anything like that has been done yet.

Is there anyway to do the question thing again, or are we still doing that? I dunno if spambots can get past it or not. We could always make it a ridiculously simple question, like "whatos the first letter of the english alphabet?"

Already done that. The questions used to be a lot harder and only things people who have read the comic would know. There were less bots (I assume because anyone sent from another site to sign up for a bot account would have no idea what the answer was), but there were also less new members. Now the questions are common knowledge stuff, which means more new members, but also more bots. Constantly changing the questions could help maybe.

I haven't tried the blacklist plugin yet. I'll try being around a little more to help ban them in the meantime.

Forum is slowing down and I see we have eight hundred and three "active users." That's pretty high up. I could have sworn it used to say around 100-140 active users.

Could it be the bot accounts are affecting the data transfer rate?

Is there some way we can stick all the spam bots into a giant volcano?

Dogma mentioned a neat idea:

is there a way we could just prevent new accounts from making threads until they have a certain number of posts? Even 5 would help, since most bots tend to only make threads, and the occasional times we DO get a regular posting bot, that's all it does anyway.

Then they'd just post spam in regular threads, which is harder to find I imagine.

The bots here do either one or the other, I have not seen one that does both (and a thread-maker is likely not equipped to post in threads and vice-versa since that'd be two entirely different scripts to run)

and the ones that make threads outnumber the posters about 10:1 but idk, it was just an idea

Tracking a bot that posts isn't really any harder than dealing with one that makes a thread. It only becomes an issue when people start posting in reaction to the bot instead of reporting it, cause then we can't see when a bot has posted without having to dig for it.
