Default Marvel Cinematic Universe

Just making a thread to wrangle together all those Avengers series movies because we've got new new news on movies that don't really need a thread yet. So here's Phase Two.

Honestly I'm just copying and pasting shit from here so check this out for professional formatting

Quote:
The Thor sequel, due out November 9, 2013 and directed by Game of Thrones' Alan Taylor, is now called Thor: The Dark World. That ties in with suggestions that the sequel would see Thor explore more of the Nine Worlds of the Asgardian dimension, and suggests that Thor's specific destination is Svartalfheim, the world of the Dark Elves.

That in turn gives us a clue at the possible identity of the villain. Bleeding Cool confidently reported that the Enchantress would appear in Thor 2, so when Mads Mikkelsen was cast as a villain many supposed he would play the Enchantress's usual partner in crime, Skurge the Executioner. Mikkelsen looks nothing like Skurge, who is a proverbial brickhouse, but he would be a perfect fit for Malekith the Accursed, ruler of the Dark Elves. Mikkelsen is no longer attached to Thor 2, but expect another sinisterly elven actor to take his place in The Dark World.

Quote:
The Captain America sequel, set for an April 4, 2014 release, now has confirmed directors in the Russo Brothers and a new title; Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The title inspired outgoing Cap writer Ed Brubaker to exclaim "HOLY SH*T" on Twitter. Brubaker wrote the Winter Soldier storyline in the comics that saw Cap's World War II sidekick Bucky come back from the dead as a brainwashed assassin, so it's probably safe to guess that movie Bucky (Sebastian Stan) is coming back.

It was always likely to happen, of course, but may be quicker than most fans expected. Cap's role as a man out of town may be a little compromised if his best bud is hot on his heels, but bringing back Bucky is a smart way to bridge the gap between World War II and the modern day, and we know that the sequel is meant to include period flashbacks.

Quote:
The Guardians of the Galaxy movie is confirmed for an August 1, 2014 release, with a roster of Drax, Groot, Starlord, Gamora and Rocket Raccoon. That's two dudes, one chick, one tree and one small furry mammal that eats out of bins. Forty percent of the team will be green. No word on what the plot will be, but one might make an educated guess at an appearance by Thanos.

The concept art by Charlie Wen (at the top of this article) gives a hint of what the movie might look like. It's notable that Gamora is more modestly dressed than she usually is in the comics, and her cowl and sword make her look like Phyla-Vell.
Spoiler for huge ass version of the GoTG concept art:

Quote:
Edgar Wright's Ant-Man has been in the works for a long time. Now we know it's officially in development, though no release date has been given and no actors have been cast. Wright says the story will be based on "To Steal an Ant Man" from Marvel Premiere #47 by David Michelenie, John Byrne and Bob Layton. That's the story that introduced Scott Lang as a burglar who breaks in to Hank Pym's lab to steal technology for his sick daughter Cassie, so the movie will probably feature two Ant-Men. No word on whether Wasp will appear.

Wright aired test footage at the panel that showed a stunt actor in an Ant-Man suit popping out of an air conditioning vent to take on armed goons.

Quote:
Finally, Robert Downey Jr. made a surprise appearance at the panel to air some footage from Iron Man 3 that showed new armor, lots of explosions, and a first glimpse of Ben Kingsley as a villain with ten fancy rings on his fingers. The Mandarin is in the house.

This is a rare instance where casting a non-Chinese actor in an Asian role may actually be the smart choice. Usually it's whitewashing, but given that the character originated as a horrifying yellow peril stereotype, casting someone like Kingsley (who is half Gujarati Indian) allows the character to break away from the cliche.

Iron Man 3 is due out May 13th 2013 and is directed by Shane Black. It also stars Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian and Rebecca Hall as Maya Hansen, and the story is inspired by Iron Man: Extremis by Warren Ellis and Adi Granov.
Spoiler for huge ass picture of new Iron Man armor:

At first I thought that Gamora was Phyla so I was a little sad about that realization. But that sadness lasted like a second. This is all excellent news.

I hope they train a real Raccoon to walk on it's hind legs and fire heavy weapons when casting Rocket Raccoon.

I am looking forward to all of these. And I'm glad they're making it so the Mandarin isn't some kind of ridiculous Chinese stereotype.

Also to discuss Avengers Phase One, how about that gigantic 10-bluray collection coming out. Shit looks insanely awesome.

Wondering who they're gonna cast as Ant-man, kind of hoping for Nathan Fillion ever since those rumors that he'd show up as ant-man in the avengers. Also, that new iron man armor looks a litttle doofy, to me. I dunno.

Guy Pearce and Ben Kingsley in Iron Man 3? Suddenly I'm super fucking excited for this movie.

Also, I need recommended reading for Guardians of the Galaxy, preferably in graphic novel/collection form, stat.

What else is there, after all of these?

I'm talking, new movies that could be done, staring yet-to-be-in-a-movie super heroes. I can't think of any myself, but I don't really comics (I really should start though).

I know there's been talks of a Black Panther film. I could see them doing a Captain Marvel film if they want to use it as a jumping off point for a Skrull VS Kree Avengers film, Doctor Strange could be good if done right...

Honestly, if they're making a Guardians of the Galaxy film, I'd put pretty much any Marvel intellectual property that they still have the film rights to on the table for a potential film at this point.

I think it'll be interesting to see if they can keep making these movies interconnected without also making them a big, tangled mess going forward.

I'm also interested in that. It bothers me that people want them to make movies just to set up other movies. That's not how movies work.

Also I hope they branch into television since that makes way more sense for comic properties. TV shows are serialized and interconnectivity is less of an issue. Last I heard the Alias pitch got rejected and I think they are making a Cloak and Dagger show. I mostly just want a Daredevil show, though I just realized that they probably don't have the rights back for that. But something like a Heroes for Hire show would be perfect.

Thank you.

I hear that so often and I don't understand why. I guess a large number of people either don't understand what makes a movie terrible or don't care (at least until it's time to go and see it). If Marvel's filmmakers can continue pulling off every single movie with individual care and dedication, and not make a single one of them a throwaway cash grab or sequel setup, then more power to them. I'd like to see it keep working out that way.

I remember hearing before that they wanted to do a TV series with Agent Coulson, of course that's probably changed by now, but I love the hell out of Son of Coul, so that would be fantastic.

Yeah the Marvel Cinematic universe is looking to be a clear, concise vision of the stories the comics have muddled so badly due to the nature of their medium.

There's nothing inherently muddled and confusing about the comic book medium, it's just Marvel and DC that suffer from that. All of the confusion and bullshit stems from the fact that they've chosen to make all their comic stories exist in the same universe. Which is why I'm wary about the future of these movies if they don't realize that problem.
