Default The Multi-User Dungeon Thread

I'm a fan of MUDs, MUSHes, MOOs, and MUCKs. Are you?

Here is a good website to start if you're interested.

Looking for a client? I recommend MUSHclient for Windows machines. It has a maximum of 500,000 line buffer and has an easy interface (including the use of the numpad to move instead of having to type directions). I don't know about MACs though.

I currently play on Seattle 2064, which is based on the Shadowrun 3rd Edition tabletop game, and less about killing mobs and more about the rp. It's recommended you find pdfs of the books if you want to play, though not strictly necessary. We're a little short on players today, as of typing this, but our population usually goes up a bit more than it is currently.

Since I'm the sole poster of this forgotten thread, I figure this is where I would share what I came up with last night. I have a character with knowledge skill in "Music" and I decided to have some fun and come up with some fake bands to talk about over the 'broadcast' channel. There's probably like 2 here that are real band names. I haven't quite figured out what kind of music they all play yet though.

I'm not including what EVERY name references.

Bass-Station: Didn't know there is an unincorporated part of Starke County, Indiana called this.

Troll Blood

Azanian Falcon

BeSeT: In-game an ambiguously christian electronic music trio (members are: Blood, Sweat and Tears). Out of game a reference to Canadian duo Beast.

Quetzalcorroded

Dutch and the Riggers: Riggers are people who can plug themselves into vehicles and control Drones (and vehicles) through Remote Control Decks. Dutch was Arnold Schwarzenegger's character in Predator.

The Cyberspurs

Liz and the Lepers

Van Hellwig

Wintermum

Silence Now, Secrets Know: Reference to Conrad Aiken short story Silent Snow, Secret Snow.

Master Batty (or Baty if you prefer the book spelling)

Ana Moll and the Mirrorshades

Chicago Swarm

Oni Vision: This song

I've been playing them for about 12 years, but I'm not sure how easy they would be to get into.

I used to play one of the AVP MUDs years ago. I pointed out their flawed egg laying trap system once when I overran the beginner planet with NPC facehuggers growing into drones. Might look into these sometime, but I know squat about Shadowrun.

I actually knew squat when I first started too. I was playing a Star Wars mud and this guy (who is a total asshole now that I've known him for a while), invited me to come play. I think I picked it up pretty quickly, but I accumulated a lot of pdf copies of the tabletop books, which help with fluff and mechanics, but you can pretty much just ask someone mechanics questions. Oh, and I know a lot about fluff. I feel like I've taken a class at this point.

I also played an AvP MUD for a while. I think it was set up as a PvP arena-type of thing. Was alright.

I used to play a Discworld MUD, but I've completely forgotten about what I did in it.

Anyone here play RetroMUD? I'm going to try it out.

*shrug*

Hey, do people remember Darkness Falls on AOL by Mythic? Before I first downloaded Pueblo, I remember that got me used to the idea of MUDs.

I haven't played a MUD in a while. I never really was able to get into them. I guess I could give it another shot at some point.

I'd like to answer any questions, but I'm not sure what questions you would have, and what they would be about (whether about MUDs in general or the one I linked). Just gonna throw that offer out there anyway.

And now Mina has a shoulder holster I took from the donation room. Yay! Now I can wear a belt. Before I had a holster on her thigh and on her waist. Now, for the shoulder holster, I'm thinking the Colt Peacemaker. The Ares Predator is probably the much heavier of the two. Actually, maybe the shoulder holster would distribute the weight better for the Predator.

Also,

his apparent youthfulness is due to a combination of trendy fashions and

and across his brow, and the ring of fading bruises around his neck also
subtract from the youthful, innocent first impression.
He looks to be about 2.0 meters tall and seems to weigh about 90 kg.

Alright, realizing my folly in not designing Mina a second outfit, and having to deal with my extra clothing in the wake of being IDd in a double-homicide, I think I have a simple 4-part set that should work for now.

a sleeveless dark red t-shirt with 'Oni Vision' logo across the chest

a studded dark green diagonal-zip leather jacket

a pair of tan cargo pants

a pair of buckled black motorcycle boots

I'm no color theorist, so that may in fact look hideous. Like Bret Easton Ellis (as mentioned somewhere in the featurette included on the American Psycho DVD), I'm basically putting fashion and color combinations together blind.

I always feel guilty when I buy a Ruger Super Warhawk. I never feel like my strength stat is high enough to handle it. I don't even know if that is a thing is SR3. I feel kind of shitty having to ditch my Peacemaker too, but I guess I could always find another one about somewhere later. At the moment my main cannon is going to be the Super Warhawk.

The RSW is #13 on this chart. My backup piece is actually a #11. I'm currently only carrying a #7 as I'm trying to pack a little lighter when not on a job.

I went to look at that MUD you play today and it told me that it didn't accept new players from "that site."

Were you trying to connect from Mudconnector? Because I've never tried that and there is probably an anti-spam reason for them not accepting people connecting through the site.

It let me get at least to giving it a password to use for the name. I haven't gone beyond that. Did you get to that step, or did it tell you no earlier than that?

You clicked the "telnet" thing on the site, right? I don't see anything else, but I've been missing a lot of things lately.

OOOOOOHHHHHHH! I love that the "little thing" I missed this time is the giant "Connect and Play Now" text. If you look at the little text under that in the listing, there is check connection, and telnet. Telnet should let you make a new character. I'm not big on the telnet client built into OSes but it's probably good enough for a first look.

edit: If you got that working, congrats. I, though, I gotta catch a few zeds before my heart explodes. You won't be able to use the ooc channel in CharGen, but you can use newbie (type: newbie whateveryouwanttosay)... actually, I think that all gets mentioned in CharGen. Anyway, Leon should have access to that channel too. He can probably answer questions, if not one of the staff, if they're on (they may be invisible and not show up when you type 'who'). If you want to wait till I'm not so wiped (assuming you got it to work), then I can answer questions (if Mina shows up when you type 'who', that is me).

PS: Telnet is kind of an insecure protocol.

Starting to think I'm incapable of playing a character with the "braggart" flaw (thinking back, this may be due to nobody else bragging in some way where I can try and one-up them, but definitely some of it is me not recognizing where I can start running my mouth). Which means either finding a new -1 flaw I can do to take it's place, or dropping the "College Education" edge.

Well, or dropping one of my two +2 edges, but then I'd want to find another +1, because I'm a little compulsive about my flaws/edges boiling down to 0.

Thinking about my little project character placeholder aliased Calypso, and I'm trying to figure out what sort of hair to give her. I do want it brown. Not enough brown haired people. But I got some ridiculous notion that it would be interesting if the hair in back was cut like... diagonally. I mean, that would just look ridiculous, right? Shoulder-length cut diagonally in back? It may just look like a transition in an eighties music video.
