Default You Guys Know What This Is?

Do you guys know what's up with this computer or am I gonna have to pay way too much to get something fixed?

The system starts, but then, the little light that comes on when the HD is doing something lights up and stays on... mostly constantly. It still occasionally blinks off for a microsecond, but for the most part everything is lit up.

This seems to be connected to my entire system acting crazy-slow. This is sort of similar to the effect I noticed if I did the sequence for watching a DVD wrong (there are just certain sequences of events my computer hates to deal with in relation to DVD watching). CTRL+ALT+DEL takes a hell of a long time to work, and when I get the window open, nothing is taking up huge amounts of anything.

Safe Mode works perfectly and this has kind of made me take some deep breaths and hope I didn't fuck up myself somewhere. I'm currently moving everything important off onto my laptop.

I did read somewhere that turning off Windows Search seems to help some people, but I did that (or did I?) and it didn't seem to help.

Yeah, sounds like it could be a dying hard drive to me. You could download something like Seatools or some other hard drive diagnostic tool and give that a shot and see what it says. Backing up is definitely a good idea.

The fact that safe mode works is a little weird, but I've seen stuff like that before, where safe mode works ok but it's still a hardware issue.

Great... I guess I could try downgrading to that computer I got repaired but never got around to testing... Now that I think about it, that one might have had a HD failure too. Am I doing something that makes the HD fail faster or something?

Not likely? I can't name anything off the top of my head that would do that, other than bad luck.
