I don't like the idea of account approving.

I don't like the idea of account approving either. I don't think it's really necessary if you have the most up-to-date software to block bots, and it puts people off joining.

It should be pretty obvious why a person wouldn't want to have account approval, but okay.
It makes the forum selective and a bit elitist. We don't have a problem with floods of new users who constantly post and are stupid, at most we have 1-2 new users who actually post anything per month. While it's true that they don't really add anything to the community, per se, this is still a forum attached to a webcomic and I don't think Krud would want it to be so that readers of the comic couldn't join the forum and post a question about the comic.
Additionally, people wouldn't be able to make joke accounts.

If the sole reason for adding account approval is to stop bots, I don't feel like it's worth it. It'd make the forum feel stuffier and closed off.
If that's the best solution, fine, but if there are other options I'd prefer them.

When I see this thread I start thinking of bots posting in New Jersey accents, and I am disappointed when I actually remember what this is.

Glad I'm not the only one. It would be an okay cartoon.

Oh, goddamnit, Hoogie. I was just gonna come in here and say that the name of the thread makes me think of some sort of prime time cartoon that is a spoof on something like Jersey Shore. With robots. Jersey bots.

Also, I don't get around to IP banning every bot I see, but I do ban a lot of them. I don't think account authorization is a step that should ever be taken. The software could stand to be updated, though. I'm pretty sure I have the zip file somewhere. I went to do it once, but couldn't figure out where to back everything up on Go-Daddy in case I fucked something up.

And yeah, the bots' IP ranges are rarely the same.
